As a counselor in training, I have learned that professional service and advocacy extend beyond the counseling session. Working with clients through an Employee Assistance Program (EAP) has allowed me to provide counseling services to individuals who may not otherwise have the financial ability to access therapy. I strive to advocate for clients by connecting them with additional community resources, including shelters, domestic violence resources, and other services based on their individual needs. I also provide appropriate handouts, coping strategies, and exercises that clients can use between sessions to support continued growth.
When possible, I adjust my schedule to accommodate clients who have difficulty attending sessions due to work or other responsibilities. These experiences have strengthened my understanding of the importance of making counseling accessible, meeting clients where they are, and advocating for resources that support their overall well-being.
