Reflection:

I have always known that clients are going to process and engage in counseling at their own pace. However, one thing I have had to learn is that many clients can feel anxious or scared about ending counseling, even after they have met their goals. I have learned the importance of showing clients patience and understanding while encouraging them to develop autonomy and confidence in their ability to manage challenges on their own. Rather than rushing the process, I want to continue supporting clients as they recognize their growth and become more comfortable trusting themselves outside of the therapeutic relationship.

Another thing I have had to learn is how to allow space for silence. In the beginning of my internship, I would notice a sense of awkwardness or an urge to fill the gap when silence occurred during sessions. Over time, I have realized that silence can be an important part of the therapeutic process. Allowing clients time to process their thoughts and emotions gives them the space to truly experience what they are feeling without feeling pressured to respond.
