Reflection:
A lesson I had to learn early in my internship is that, as a therapist, I am going to have biases when it comes to clients. However, it is my job to ensure these biases do not influence my reactions, behaviors, or feelings toward them. With that being said, I feel like I have been able to learn ways to recognize when a potential bias is coming up in the moment. I am still able to listen and be present for the client while also noticing the internal reactions I may be having to what they are sharing.
For example, if a client shares something that challenges my personal beliefs or values, I have learned the importance of acknowledging my internal reaction without allowing it to interfere with the therapeutic relationship. Rather than judging the client or allowing my personal beliefs to influence the session, I can use these moments as opportunities for self-reflection and growth. I want to continue building my self-awareness and recognizing that being an effective counselor does not mean I will never have biases, but rather that I am willing to acknowledge them, reflect on them, and ensure they do not interfere with my ability to provide ethical and culturally responsive care.
